A boon for DIY enthusiasts, this vacuum cleaner attachment employs suction power to affix the vacuum to the wall. It proves especially beneficial for meticulous tradespeople and tidy DIY enthusiasts, enabling them to capture drilling debris while maintaining two free hands for the actual drilling process. Alan sought a £40k investment from the Dragons, offering a 10% stake in his business in return.

We worke with Adtec Europe Ltd from to develop plasma delivery products for medical and other sterilisation applications. projects included the concept and engineering design of various plasma torch housings and IP65 sheet metal enclosures. Additionally, we value-engineered and improved the Steriplas medical device, enhancing its design and detailing to BS8888 standard.

Medical Infusion Pump Development

Mi Design worked closely with Alaris Medical Systems to develop a mass-produced medical infusion pump and add value and improve functionality of existing products. Project highlights included the final engineering of a highly accurate peristaltic fluid pumping mechanism for efficient manufacture and Improving the syringe reognition capabilities of an existing syringe pump.
All design solutions were fully tolerance analised with unambiguous drawings to BS8888. We ensured the quality of parts by collaborating with suppliers and conducting thorough FMEA.

Herschel Space observatory “SPIRE” Instrument

Mi Design collaborated with University College London on the Herschel Space Observatory’s SPIRE instrument. We were responsible for the optical mountings and the instrument’s cases and covers. PIR Intrusion Detection Product

In collaboration with Adpro, Mi Design developed a high-sensitivity PIR intrusion detection product in 2015. The project included the concept design, engineering detailing to BS8888, and the acquisition of tooling from China. The V0-rated injection-moulded enclosure was designed to house the sensitive electronics while incorporating a lockable tilt and twist mechanism for pole or wall mounting.

SuperNEMO Particle Physics Detector
Industry: Scientific Instruments & Research
Capabilities Used: Mechanical Design, Fully Automated System Development
Mi Design partnered with University College London and Manchester University from 2000 to 2014 to develop the SPIRE instrument, part of the Herschel Space Telescope. We provided concept and detailed designs for the optical mountings, instrument cases, and covers. Additionally, we contributed to the SuperNEMO neutrino detector by designing the tracker assembly and an automated wire feeding and tensioning mechanism.

Working with Filton Engineering Ltd from 2018 to present, Mi Design developed precision flow meters and their associated components. We designed IP65 injection-moulded housings and investment cast machined assemblies for these high-accuracy devices, ensuring precision in manufacturing and compliance with BS8888 standards.

Waste Water Monitoring

Mi Design collaborated with In-Situ to engineer an optical detector for the wastewater treatment industry, optimising performance at ultraviolet frequencies using SolidWorks Rayviz. High-spec lenses and glass components were sourced to ensure system precision.
The project also involved designing machined parts in Acetal, Stainless Steel, and Titanium, followed by full tolerance analysis to guarantee system integrity. Value engineering efforts identified redundant parts and reduced costs by re-sourcing components. All design solutions were supported by clear BS8888-compliant part drawings, with collaboration facilitated through SolidWorks’ PDM and SharePoint for team members in the USA.

Mi Design partnered with Bowers & Wilkins to reverse-engineere the iconic Bowers & Wilkins Nautilus speaker, optimising its design for improved manufacturability and performance. This work ensured that the new models met stringent performance standards while maintaining the brand’s signature sound quality.
Develop a range of in-wall and in-ceiling home cinema speakers. Working alongside acoustic engineers and industrial designers, we produced 3D CAD models, full assembly drawings, and documentation. This collaboration resulted in the development of three high-specification speaker models ready for mass production.

Mi Design partnered with Startrite Designs to develop specialised machines for automotive manufacturing. These machines included a bumper clipping device for Ford and a sand core cleaning system for engine blocks. Both machines were pneumatically operated and optimised for high-efficiency production processes in automotive manufacturing.
A fully automated glass grinding and polishing machine was designed for Caithness Glass incorporating a rotary table, vacuum cups and staged grinding heads. A full set of part and assembly drawings were supplied ready for manufacture.
